What is MRI?
An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) system is made up of
a large magnet that produces a very high magnetic field.
Associated with the magnet is a radio frequency (RF)
transmitter/receiver and a processing computer.
When a body is positioned within the magnetic field, its
nuclei align with and rotate around the direction of
this field. As an RF signal of a hydrogen-specific
frequency is transmitted through the body, some of the
nuclei absorb the RF energy and change direction
(or “resonate”). When the RF signal is stopped the
nuclei return to their original position, releasing the
absorbed energy and generating a signal of their own.
This signal is picked up by an RF receiver antenna and
processed by the computer into an image, superior to
conventional “open magnets.”
MR images provide excellent contrast and representation
of tissue anatomy. Millennium Imaging’s equipment
recognizably produces a higher-quality signal—which
results in superior image quality.
While Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT, or CT) images
excel in the detailing of bone structures, MR’s ability
to clearly differentiate soft tissues makes it the
modality of choice for many procedures—including head,
spine, and musculoskeletal studies.
MRI provides your doctor with a view of what’s happening
inside your body without the harmful effects of X-rays
or the use of iodinated dyes. The exam is totally
pain-free.
